The Los Angeles Angels take on the Seattle Mariners in the second game of a three-game series. The Angels are 50-48 while the Mariners are 39-60 – not including the results of Friday’s game. Right hander Griffin Canning (3-5) gets the start for the Angels while the Mariners have not yet named a starter. Game time is 9:10 p.m. Eastern at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
Angels settle for split with Houston
The Los Angeles Angels came away from their series with the first-place Houston Astros with a sweep, which, on its face, is not a bad result. But considering the fact that they won the first two games, it’s a bit disappointing. They still have been playing good baseball and have improved to 50-48. They are still 11 games out of first, but have got themselves in the mix. Matt Harvey did not have a good outing, allowing 6 runs in 6 innings. Brian Goodwin was the only Angel with more than one hit as he went 3 for 4. Mike Trout is back in the lineup and he had one hit.
The Angels have been pounding the baseball lately. They average 5.1 runs per game, which is 11th in the majors. They have raised their team batting average to .261, which is 8th in the MLB. They also have a team slugging percentage of .444, which is 12th in the league. They are 12th in the home runs. Mike Trout has been raking. He leads the team with a batting average of .305 with 30 HRs and 75 RBIs. He’s 4th in the majors in home runs and 3rd in RBIs. Albert Pujols is batting .243 with 14 HRs and 56 RBIs, while Tommy La Stella is hitting .295 with 16 HRs and 45 RBIs. David Fletcher is batting .294 with 5 HRs and 32 RBIs, while Kole Calhoun is batting .236 with 21 HRs and 50 RBIs. Also, Shohei Ohtani is batting .301 with 14 HRs and 40 RBIs, while Andrelton Simmons is hitting .290 with 5 HRs and 27 RBIs. LaStella is on the 10-day IL while Pujols is questionable.
The Angels pitching has been shaky. They have a team ERA of 4.89, which is 21st in the league, and they have a team WHIP of 1.36, which is 17th. Griffin Canning will get the start on Saturday. The right-hander is 3-5 with a 4.75 ERA. He got nailed for 3 runs in 1.1 innings last time out.
The Seattle Mariners have really tanked after a hot start and have settled into the bottom of the AL West. They have lost 9 of their last 10 games and the games really haven’t been that close. On Thursday, they got crushed by Oakland 10-2. The night before they lost 9-2. In the last 6 games, they have been outscored 54-13. Ouch. The pitching has been awful and the once potent lineup has gone quiet. The Mariners are 39-60 and 22.5 games out of first. But a lot of those wins came early after a hot start. It’s going to be a long second half for Seattle.

Until this recent stretch, the Mariners offense had been decent. They average 5.1 runs per game, which is 11th in the league. They are batting .241 as a team, which is 25th in the league, and they have a slugging percentage of .443, which is 14th. They are 3rd in the majors in home runs. Domingo Santana leads the Mariners with an average of .277 with 19 home runs and 64 RBIs. Daniel Vogelbach is hitting .235 with 21 HRs and 51 RBIs, while Tim Beckham is batting .233 with 14 homers and 40 RBIs. Mitch Haniger is batting .220 with 15 HRs and 32 RBIs, while Omar Narvaez is hitting .294 with 16 HRs and 38 RBIs. Ryon Healy and Mitch Haniger are on the 10-day IL.
The Mariners pitching has been brutal, especially lately. They have a team ERA of 5.36, which is 28th in baseball. They have a WHIP of 1.45, which is 24th in the league. They have not yet named a starter for Saturday but Wade LeBlanc was in this spot after Mike Leake last time around. But LeBlanc got brut5alized last time out so he may be getting passed over.
