Indianapolis and Seattle open up their 2018 NFL preseason on Thursday night at CenturyLink Field. There’s a lot of curiosity around a new-look Seahawks that are hoping to reload as a contender. For the Colts, all eyes will be set at the return of quarterback Andrew Luck.
Luck expected to be in action for the Colts, but it’ll be minimal
You’d be forgiven if you’re struggling to remember who the Indianapolis quarterback used to be. It’s been December 2016 since Andrew Luck has been in competition, and there was a stretch between last October and a few months ago where he didn’t even throw a football. The team has announced that he will play throughout this preseason. As he’s coming off a long return from a shoulder injury, expect him to play very sparingly, likely the first drive or two.
Expect a good chunk of work from the backup quarterbacks like Jacoby Brissett and Brad Kaaya. Brissett filled in under center through most of the 2017 season and Kaaya will be entering his sophomore season. Last year, he played in all four preseason games, completing 24-of-40 pass attempts for 291 yards with three touchdowns and one pick. Most of his work came in the first and final preseason contests.
Seahawks will focus on rebuilding defense during the preseason
Seattle always has a winning mentality under head coach Pete Carroll, and he’s even a believer in preseason games. They won all four contests last year with backup quarterback Austin Davis getting most of the work. Especially in the first and last preseason games. In total, he completed 24-of-35 passes for 316 total yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He even ran with it a bit (7 att, 17 yds), but he clearly doesn’t have the dual-threat nature of Russell Wilson.
The preseason is also very important to the Seahawks because they’ll need to find out what works on defense. The majority of their veterans are either gone or not expected to return with career-ending injuries. Players like K.J. Wright and newcomer Barkevious Mingo are locks at linebacker, so we could see a lot of action from players like D.J. Alexander and Jacob Pugh. Shaquill Griffin will be transitioning to where former CB Richard Sherman played.
